Canadians Pay More and Get Less!

OTTAWA-February 12, 1999

Today, Jay Hill, MP for Prince George-Peace River, hammered the Liberal government on their relentless attack of high taxes on Canadian families. In Question Period he lead the Official Opposition with the following question:

"This government's tax policy is like Zeller's in reverse, pay more….get less. Pay more taxes…. get less health care and other services. This year the Liberals are squeezing 1,800 more tax dollars out of each taxpayer than they did five years ago. But during the same period, they cut our social program spending by $1,150 per person. With taxes at a record high and health care funding at a record low, why does this government continue its pay more get less policy?"

The Liberal government will be bringing down their Budget on Tuesday, February 16, 1999. It is expected that there will be selective tax breaks and a small re-investment in health care. It is also expected that the Liberals will continue to spend millions of taxpayers dollars on ridiculous projects and unaccountable patronage jobs.

"Canadians deserve better than this, we work hard to support our families, and this Liberal government continues to raid our pocketbooks. Paul Martin is preparing to tell Canadians what he is giving them in his budget. What he won’t give them is the whole truth, that we are paying more taxes today than ever before in Canadian history and getting less return," concluded Hill.
