US Considers Canada a Drug Threat

July 7, 1999

OTTAWA-Today Jay Hill MP, for Prince George-Peace River wrote an open letter to Solicitor General, Lawrence MacAuley, informing him that the web site of the United States Central Intelligence Agency’s fact book on Canada lists the following:

Illicit Drugs: illicit producer of cannibis for the domestic drug market; use of hydroponics technology permits growers to plant large quantities of high-quality marijuana indoors; growing role as a transit point for heroin and cocaine entering the US market.

"Canada is becoming Columbia north, but at least the Colombian government has made a concerted effort to shut down the drug cartels. The Canadian government makes it as easy as possible for drugs to enter our country. Clearly, with good reasons the US considers Canada a drug threat," stated Hill.

The Official Opposition has called on the government for years to toughen up Canada’s drug laws and to allocate adequate resources in order to put up a decent fight. The government continues to waste money on pointless schemes like the gun registry and vote buying while leaving Canada’s peace officers under-funded, under staffed and ill-equipped.

"The criminal world knows Canada is an easy mark. Right now the drug cartels are recruiting young people in Central America and using our refugee system to get their pushers on our streets, The RCMP has been gutted, our Customs Officers are told that their first priority is to collect taxes, and drug dealers are given conditional sentences. Is it any wonder that the Americans consider Canada a detriment to their war on drugs?
