TURNING
SURPLUS INTO SLUSH
February 18, 2003
OTTAWA – Jay
Hill, Member of Parliament for Prince George - Peace River,
responded to the federal budget, stating it continues
a longstanding Liberal tradition of taxing hard-working
Canadian families in order to fund an agenda of big government
spending.
“The federal
government’s budget surpluses were collected on the backs
of taxpayers. With the federal deficit now eliminated,
Canadians should have been rewarded with more substantial
tax relief. Instead, they were asked to foot the
bill for the Prime Minister’s legacy and help launch a
leadership campaign for the Minister of Finance,” said
Hill.
“Of the spending
announcements made today, the government has initiated
several new grandiose schemes which do not reflect the
day-to-day realities of Canadians. The Liberals
could have chosen our armed forces over corporate welfare
and a reduction in the GST rather than continuing to throw
away millions on the gun registry – but they didn’t.
Manley chose to simply continue Martin’s tax and spend
habit.”
“Canadians
justifiably don’t trust the Liberals to manage their tax
dollars in light of billions of taxpayers’ dollars mismanaged
through the useless firearms registry, ludicrous advertising
contracts and the well-known HRDC boondoggle, yet this
budget dramatically increases spending
again,” concluded Hill.
